Rudyard Kipling wrote Pity Poor Fighting Men after a journey with injured soldiers on a hospital-train during the Boer War, where he witnessed their appalling suffering.
Shaw’s dedication To my wife may refer to the fact that both of them had lost a brother in WW1.
